Pilates FAQ

Congratulations on taking a significant step toward your long-term health! Our Pilates reformer classes are designed to be easy to learn, with a strong emphasis on executing each move correctly at every stage.

For your first class, we recommend arriving at least 20 minutes early to allow us to give you a tour of the studio and familiarize you with the equipment. Our instructors will cover the different components of the machine and assess if there are any adjustments needed based on your individual limitations.

For your safety, we require you to wear grip socks during class, which are available for purchase in our retail shop. Additionally, it’s a good idea to bring some water to stay hydrated during the class, and you can conveniently purchase water at our facility as well.

Beyond these preparations, all we ask is that you bring the commitment to do your best and dedicate yourself to your health and success. Our instructors are here to support you on your fitness journey, and we look forward to having you in class. If you have any questions or concerns, feel free to reach out, and we’ll be happy to assist you.

Welcome to our Pilates community!

All sculp’d classes can be modified for any experience level. Here are our recommendations for beginners:

If you have never taken a Pilates or Yoga class before, including mat or reformer Pilates, we recommend a 1:1 with one of trained instructors to get an intensive on the machine and the moves.

But if you are comfortable with group instruction and have some familiarity with Pilates movements, skip a 1:1 and try our regular Total Body class. Please arrive 15 minutes before class and the teacher will guide you through the machine and basic moves.

For those who would prefer more descriptive movements and guidance on the sculp’dformer, we offer  the Total Body Basics class. These classes typically include an introduction to the machine parts, expectations during class, as well as more guidance by the instructor through each movement.

Total Body Basics Availability*:

  • Sundays at 11:30 am

Reformer Pilates is a type of Pilates exercise that involves the use of a specialized piece of equipment called a Pilates reformer. The reformer is a bed-like frame with a flat platform (carriage) that rolls back and forth on wheels within the frame. It is attached to one end of the reformer by a set of springs, providing resistance as the carriage is moved.

At sculp’d+ our reformer machines are called sculpdformers because of their unique design with extra tools that help guide our customers through a total body workout on the machine. You won’t find another Pilates studio in Old Town with machines like ours!

Key features of aour sculpdformer include:

  1. Springs: The reformer is equipped with adjustable springs that can be attached to the carriage and various other components of the machine. These springs provide resistance during exercises and can be adjusted to modify the intensity of the workout.

  2. Straps and Ropes: Straps and ropes are often attached to the reformer, allowing for a variety of exercises that engage different muscle groups. Users can pull on the straps or push against them to work specific muscles.

  3. Footbar: The footbar is located at the end of the reformer and can be used as a support or anchor for the feet during exercises. It can also be adjusted to accommodate different body positions.

  4. Carriage: The carriage is the moving platform that slides back and forth along the frame. It provides a smooth surface for users to perform exercises against the resistance provided by the springs.

  5. Stable Platforms: The platforms are stable surfaces in the front and back of the machine to allow users additional levels of strength training.

Reformer Pilates offers several benefits:

  • Increased Resistance: The adjustable springs allow for a range of resistance levels, making it suitable for users of various fitness levels.

  • Versatility: The reformer offers a wide variety of exercises that target different muscle groups. It can be adapted to focus on strength, flexibility, and overall body conditioning.

  • Support and Alignment: The machine provides support during exercises, promoting proper body alignment and helping users maintain the correct form.

  • Low-Impact: Like traditional Pilates, reformer Pilates is generally low-impact, making it suitable for individuals with joint concerns or those seeking a gentle yet effective workout.

At sculp’d+, all of the Pilates classes are led by qualified instructors. Each of our instructors goes through rigorous training in order to provide guidance on proper form and tailor the exercises to individual needs and goals.

For all classes at sculp’d+ in Old Town Alexandria, we encourage you to wear comfortable and form-fitting clothing. Loose-fitting clothing can make it difficult for the instructor to see your form and make adjustments as needed.

It’s best to wear clothing that allows for a full range of motion and won’t restrict your movements. Usually, people wear form-fitting athletic attire like leggings, yoga pants, tank tops, or fitted shirts that stay tucked in during exercises. All in-class guests are required to wear grippy socks – and have a super cute collection in our clothing boutique!

Pilates is a form of exercise that focuses on strength, flexibility, and overall body awareness. While Pilates can contribute to weight loss as part of a comprehensive fitness and weight management plan, it may not be as effective as some other forms of exercise, such as cardiovascular exercises like running, cycling, or swimming, when it comes to burning a significant number of calories.

However, it’s important to note that the primary factor in weight loss is creating a calorie deficit, where you burn more calories than you consume. While Pilates can be part of a balanced exercise routine, combining it with cardiovascular exercises and a healthy diet is often more effective for weight loss.

Always consult with a healthcare professional or fitness expert before starting a new exercise program, especially if you have any health concerns or pre-existing conditions. They can help you tailor your fitness routine to your individual needs and goals.

Absolutely! Reformer Pilates classes are indeed suitable for pregnant individuals. Your well-being is our top priority, and we recommend consulting your doctor before starting any exercise program. Rest assured that our expert instructors are specifically trained to work with individuals at various fitness levels, including pregnant clients. They are adept at adapting exercises to meet individual needs, ensuring a safe and effective workout.

At our studio, we understand the unique needs of pregnant and postpartum individuals. Each class can be personalized to accommodate your specific requirements during this special time. Your safety is paramount, and our instructors will provide modifications for any movement that may not be suitable for pregnant individuals.

Our commitment to a custom approach extends to strength training workouts, ensuring that every participant receives tailored guidance for their fitness journey. Many of our clients have successfully continued their Pilates practice during pregnancy, and we’re excited to support you in maintaining your fitness routine through this incredible phase of your life.

If you ever have any concerns or questions about your workout, please don’t hesitate to reach out. Your well-being is our priority, and we are here to provide answers and support. Feel free to contact us anytime – we’ve got your back as you embark on this amazing journey.

Pilates is recognized for its effectiveness in alleviating back pain through its emphasis on core strength, flexibility, and body awareness. By targeting core muscles, Pilates provides crucial support to the spine, promoting proper alignment and reducing the risk of back pain. Additionally, the exercises focus on maintaining good posture, integrating stretching and flexibility to reduce muscle tightness.

The low-impact nature of Pilates makes it suitable for those with back pain, offering customizable routines for various fitness levels. Pilates fosters body awareness, encouraging conscious movement patterns and improved body mechanics. Individuals with existing back conditions should consult their healthcare provider before starting Pilates. As always, we recommend you consult with your doctor first, but working with a certified instructor ensures exercises are performed with proper technique, maximizing benefits while minimizing injury risk.
